05 / NETHERLANDS GUIDE

Money, Phone, Daily Essentials

Currency

  • Euro (€)
  • Approx exchange rate: 1 EUR ≈ 60 PHP (varies — check at time of travel)
  • Coins go down to €0.01 — keep some for small purchases

Cash vs Card

  • Card (debit/credit) is dominant — Netherlands is mostly cashless
  • Many places accept ONLY cards (especially Maestro / V Pay)
  • PIN-based cards work better than American-style swipe cards
  • ATMs widely available (look for "Geldautomaat")
  • Notify your Philippine bank before travel to avoid card freezes
  • Keep ~€100 cash for emergencies / small market vendors

Phone & Internet

  • Buy a Dutch SIM at Schiphol or any phone shop (Lebara, Lyca, Vodafone, KPN — €10–20 for 5–20GB)
  • OR enable international roaming with Globe/Smart (expensive — only for emergencies)
  • OR rely on hotel + café WiFi (widely available, free, fast)
  • Recommended: get a Lebara prepaid SIM at Schiphol arrival hall

Power & Plugs

  • Type C and Type F plugs (same as most of EU)
  • Voltage: 230V, 50Hz
  • PH plugs WILL fit Type C sockets directly (PH uses Type A/B but Type C is compatible with European 2-prong)
  • Bring a universal adapter just in case (multi-device USB hubs are common)

Time Zone

  • CEST (UTC+2) in summer / CET (UTC+1) in winter
  • Netherlands is 6 hours BEHIND Manila in winter, 6 hours behind in summer too (PH doesn't do DST)
  • 9 AM Amsterdam = 3 PM Manila (winter), 3 PM Manila (summer)

Weather

  • Maritime climate — mild but rainy year-round
  • Always carry an umbrella — even on sunny days
  • Summer: 18–25°C, can hit 30°C
  • Spring/Autumn: 8–18°C, very rainy
  • Winter: 0–8°C, occasional snow, lots of grey days

Safety

  • Pickpockets in tourist areas of Amsterdam (Centraal Station, Dam Square, Red Light District) — be aware

  • Stay on well-lit streets at night (still very safe by global standards)
